Windows XP Environment
Problam with large size Backup file
How to Correct HPBR XP corrupt backups.
Note this only occurs under backups of large size.
Conditions:
Example 1:
The customer took backup of imp files and 72 backup files were created each 645120kb
First file; is called ´Backup from 20-01-09 082842.001.exe´, and is 645,120KB...The
rest are called ´Backup from 20-01-09 082842.002.stc....except the last one which
is ´Backup from 20-01-09 082842.072.stc so from the number on the stc files u can
see 72 stc files are there There are two other related files, ´Backup from 20-01-09
082842.bst which is 2KB; and ´Backup from 20-01-09 082842.log´, which is 107,617KB
and is a text file, listing each and every file that was backed up.
The issue is that when customer clicks on the exe file he gets error this file
is not a valid backup. The file may Be corrupt, empty or part of
a set of CD/DVDs. Please delete the corrupt or empty file or select the first CD/DVD
of the set to begin the restore.
Example 2:
A customer has trouble restoring a backup. Selected backup from the F11 console
Selected advanced menu
Selected the folders
My Documents
Email
Internet Folders
Choose an external USB drive as the target
Backup runs and reports success.
The files are “Backup 12-31-08 123057.001.exe” along with a bunch of files “Backup
12-31-08 123057.002.stc” incrementing to “Backup 12-31-08 123057.067.stc”. A directory
listing is shown in the attached, list.txt. The files are all about 650MB in size.
The “Backup 12-31-08 123057.log” is too large to attach but says Successful for
each file that was backed up.
When you attempt to run “Backup 12-31-08 123057.001.exe” HPBR starts up and you
get an error: “This file is not a valid backup. The file may be corrupt, empty
or part of a set of CD/DVDs. Please delete the corrupt or empty
file or select the first CD/DVD of the set to begin the restore.”
Solution:
Recovery Tool Solution:
Locate the backup set. Make a copy (backup) of the "Backup
name".EXE file.
Unzip the contents of the XP Recovery Tool to a temp folder on C:\
Open the recovery tool and select the backupname.EXE file
Manual Solution:
User you favorite Hex editor, but ensure the hex editor can search data and make
sure the hex editor is capable of writing the data back into the file. I always
use a registered (licensed) version of WinHex
Locate the backup set. Make a copy (backup) of the "Backup
name".EXE file.
Load the original "Backup name".EXE file into the hex editor
search for the Hex string - 83 C4 04 81 FB 08 02 00 00 8B E8
Should find 2 occurrences of this
One is followed by "77 6C" and the other is followed by "76 94"
In the string listed above Change the 02 in the Hex String to 05 in both occurrences of the string
So the ending result will be: 83 C4 04 81 FB 08 05
00 00 8B E8
With “77 6C” following one and “76 94” following the
other
Save the file and exit the editor
Relaunch the backup by executing the "Backup name".EXE
Remember larger backups take a long time to load, be patient

Release Date: 2008-09-10 Version:
1.00 A
Description
This package provides an HP update for the Microsoft BitLocker Program for the supported
notebook models and operating systems.
The Microsoft BitLocker Program (BLService.exe) monitors the partition header and
corrects MBR (the system boot sector) if needed. When Microsoft BitLocker is enabled
and the MBR is changed, BLservice.exe starts to correct it.
Fixes
Fixes an issue where an error, which indicates that the BLService.exe has stopped
working, is displayed when an external USB drive is connected to the notebook. After
installing this update, the Microsoft BitLocker Program only monitors the internal
hard drive.
